Small herbs from short, fleshy rhizome. Leaves few arranged in tufts. Inflorescence terminal on the leafy shoot, sometimes terminal on a separate leafless shoot, uppermost flowers opening first; bracts distichous (spirally arranged in Curcumorpha), densely imbricating, each subtending 1 flower; bracteole open to the base and entire, boat-shaped; flowers white, yellow or red; calyx tubular; corolla tube slender, usually shorter than the bracts; lateral staminodes oblong, petaloid; labellum conspicuous and usually concave, entire to emarginate; lateral staminodes and filament adnate to base of labellum; anther crest absent or very small; ovary incompletely 3-locular to 3-locular. Capsule fleshy, subglobose, dehiscence unknown; seeds with white, lacerate aril, often longer than the seed. 2n = 20, 24, 36. (From Kubitzki, et al., pp.486-87)
Found in southern tropical Himalaya throughout SE Asia, most species in the Indochinese monsoon region and on Borneo.
Comprises about 60 species.
