Alice R. Tangerini was born in Takoma Park, Maryland on 25 April 1949. She received a B.F.A. from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond in 1972 and since then has been the staff illustrator in the Department of Botany, Smithsonian Institution. She has prepared thousands of technical illustrations, which have appeared in scores of botanical publications. In addition, she has been active teaching classes, organizing workshops, and lecturing on scientific and botanical illustration. In 1980, she had a one-man show of palm drawings, which was held in the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution. Her illustrations have also been included in a large number of group exhibits in the United States. In 1990, Alice organized, designed, and curated an exhibit, "North American Wild Flowers: Watercolors by Mary Vaux Walcott," which was on display in the National Museum of Natural History.
