Although some species described in this genus are algae, the type has been shown to be spores of a microsporidian, Gurleya marssoniella Vávra, by Komárek et Vávra (Arch. Protistenk. 111: 13. 1968). The generic name is retained in botanical nomenclature for purposes of homonymy.
