Drawing of Cladonia cristatella

Searchable List of Names
in the Cladoniaceae (Lichens)

The Cladoniaceae, including the British soldier lichen (Cladonia cristatella Tuck.), pyxie cup lichen (C. pyxidata (L.) Hoffm.), and reindeer lichens (Cladina spp.), contains some of the most conspicuous and beautiful lichens. However, even these familiar lichens are inadequately understood and often notoriously difficult to identify. As part of an international project to improve the taxonomy and nomenclature of this family, Monographic Studies in the Cladoniaceae, we are producing a database of currently accepted species names that will be linked to descriptions, illustrations, and maps. As a first step we are providing a list of accepted names in Cladoniaceae from the Names in Current Use project (T. Ahti, Regnum Vegetabile 128: 58-106. 1993).
